You may be wondering why an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is the best choice for your tooth restoration and other oral health needs. While dentists have the ability to perform some of the same procedures as oral surgeons, many dentists refer patients to oral surgeons because of their extensive, specialized training. Oral surgeons must complete years of training before being allowed to treat patients, and this training is what gives them the ability to provide you, the patient, with the safest care. Here at Oconee County Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we want you to feel assured that you are receiving the best treatment available to you, and our highly skilled oral surgeon relies on his years of experience and training to ensure you that you are well cared for.
Below we’ve provided some additional information about the way oral surgeons become certified and continue their education to provide you with the most advanced care.
There are a couple of different ways to become an oral surgeon. Upon completing dental school, future oral surgeons must choose a residency program approved by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation. These programs vary in length from four to six years and include extensive training in a myriad of procedures, such as working with anesthesiologists to learn how to properly administer anesthesia.
The second path involves earning a dual degree in both dentistry and medicine, meaning the surgeon would be a licensed oral surgeon and medical doctor. This program, on average, takes another six years to complete, as participants perform not only oral surgery but also all surgeries that a typical medical intern would perform. This training is in addition to completing four years of dental school and four years of undergraduate study. In short, both of these paths include years of training beyond what is typically required of other dental professionals, which provides oral surgeons with comprehensive skills to offer you the best possible care.
Additionally, oral surgeons perform certain procedures, like the placement of dental implants and wisdom teeth removal, more often than other dental professionals typically do. This makes them more practiced and often more precise at these procedures. When it comes to something as important as your smile, choosing a doctor with the most training and experience can make a huge difference.
